Brownie Bits – February 5th

The Super Bowl is only a couple days away and once again, as they have been since the NFL/AFL merger which essence created the Super Bowl, the Cleveland Browns will once again be merely spectators. In the past month, the only news coming from the Browns has been the changes that have been made in the front office. Still, I was able to find enough ingredients to whip up another batch of Brownie Bits. Enjoy!

Mike Furrey Named Finalist For NFL Humanitarian Award

In the game of football, so much is made of the big plays……especially the ones made by some of the greatest players in the game. Even on a team with such a history of losing, like the Browns, the plays that grab headlines during the season are the 98-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns, and the record break rushing performances, like we saw from Josh Cribbs and Jerome Harrison this season. In the game of football, it’s the plays that happen on the field that get the most attention. In the game of life though, plays like that make little difference other than making the Sunday of a long-suffering Browns fan, a lot better than he or she may be used to. In the game of life, it’s often the less celebrated things that matter.

McNabb to Browns? My Crystal Ball Says “Yes!”

It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks in the land of the Cleveland Browns. First, the team added a new president in Mike Holmgren. Then, head coach Eric Mangini was given a somewhat surprising vote of confidence when he and his coaching staff were retained for at least one more season by Holmgren. Then this week, the Browns introduced Tom Heckert as the team’s new general manager, and Brian Wiedmeier as their new executive vice president of business operations. When Randy Lerner committed to a new level of leadership for the Browns, he wasn’t kidding. The Cleveland Browns already look significantly different than they did less than a month ago, when you look at the front office.

That change is a good sign for the Browns and their future, but at the end of the day, the most important factor will be what change is seen on the field in wins and losses. The team showed it can win, with the four victories to close out the 2009 season, but as I have stated in previous posts, there is no reason to feel comfortable with how those wins were accomplished. The passing game was lacking and even Mike Holmgren referred to that in his recent press conference when he said “….if you throw six balls a game, you are not going to win” and agreed “…we have to look at that.”. Thank you, Mike. I knew I could count on you!

Keeping Mangini and Staff Brings More Questions Than Answers

It’s been a few days and the dust has settled after what was purportedly a number of meetings between Browns president, Mike Holmgren, and head coach Eric Mangini last Wednesday. The outcome as we now know was that Mangini will have another year to prove that the first-ever four wins for a Browns team to close out a Browns season, was not a fluke….but rather a sign of better things to come for the Browns in 2010.

Mangini To Stay, and Coaches Too, But Cribbs Slipping Away?

It has yet to be confirmed by the Cleveland Browns, but according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.COM, in a recent article, Eric Mangini and his entire staff have been told that they will be returning for another season.

No Dancing With The Czar – Holmgren Shoots Straight and Gets To Work

Having never been a fan of the Green Bay Packers or the Seattle Seahawks, I never really paid a lot of attention to Mike Holmgren. Actually, as guy who grew up in Minnesota and still has an affection for the Vikings….as well as the Browns of course… when Holmgren was with the Packers and I viewed him with purple colored glasses, I pretty much couldn’t stand him. Just like we Browns fans can’t stand anything black and gold….ala Steelers, I pretty much despised Holmgren. To me he was just a Craig Stadler look alike who I hated….along with his team….on Sundays. However, much like we Browns fans disliked Jamal Lewis when he was in Baltimore only to embrace him when he put on brown and orange, now that Mike Holmgren is leading the Browns, I welcome him with open arms.

After Solid Finish, All Mangini Can Do Is Wait

For the first time since 1994……yes, that was before the Browns moved to Baltimore, became the Ravens, and then were reincarnated in 1999…. the Cleveland Browns won their fourth game in a row on Sunday. Normally that would be great news for a head coach and his staff, and also good news for the franchise. Well, the latter is true, but it does not mean that Eric Mangini is ready to celebrate and prepare for next season as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. The problem is that prior to the four game winning streak to close out the season, Mangini’s team was at 1-11 and the wheels were already in motion for the Browns organization to undergo an overhaul.

Mangini May Need to Part With Daboll, To Keep His Job

As you look around the NFL, head coaches have varied rolls within their coaching staffs. Some are orchestrators who leave the running of their offenses and defenses to their respective coordinators (i.e. Bill Belichik). Some take on the play calling duties of the offense (i.e. Brad Childress). Others take on the play calling duties of their defense (i.e. Rex Ryan). Being cut from the Belichik tree, Eric Mangini allows his coordinators to call their plays and run their respective shows. However, it’s that faith in his coordinators…..namely offensive coordinator Brian Daboll…..that could prove to be Mangini’s undoing.
